Being Alone vs. Being Lonely: The Real Difference

Being alone is not the same thing as being lonely.

What's the difference?

Well, being alone, that's a simple definition. I'm here and nobody else is around.

Being lonely is different than that. Being lonely is to not be seen. When I am lonely, I'm not seen and received in my fullness and in my uniqueness. One can be in a room full or a home full of people, not alone, and be distinctly and frighteningly lonely. And one can be all alone and not be lonely at all.

So what does this point to?

This points to the need for us first to get in touch with our own needs for being seen, heard, loved, and then to be with people who will see, hear, and love us exactly as we are in the fullness of our uniqueness.

And if you're not in relationships like that, then either change the relationships or find somebody with whom you can have that relationship. But start by changing the relationship because there is the self-discovery opportunity.

We're in each other's lives to help us transform and release our barriers to seeing, being seen, loving, and being loved.
